Head Librarian

The Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, a unique global network of policy research centers in Russia, China, Europe, the Middle East, India, and the United States, seeks a full-time professional to head global library services, headquartered in Washington, DC.

The Head Librarian curates a specialized collection of news, data and research materials, and customized research and outreach to scholars across Carnegie's programs and international centers.   The position is responsible for ensuring timely, authoritative and digitally available resources and management of a physical presence in DC, which houses a collection of 9,000 print books and 100 print journals and newspapers, supplemented by a robust interlibrary loan program.  Supervising a staff of two, the Head Librarian manages reference and research assistance, library outreach, understanding and responding to users' interests and in-depth research questions, updates to staff and external relations. Duties include managing library-related licenses and contracts, collection and acquisition management, product trials, and developing and monitoring the annual library budget.

Ideal candidates should have a Master's degree in Library and Information Science and a minimum of 6-8 years of library experience in a research environment. Candidates must be well-organized, pay careful attention to detail, possess the ability to approach projects in a practical manner, and have strong creative, critical thinking, and problem solving skills. Exceptional communications skills and proficiency in library-related technology are essential. A demonstrated interest in international affairs is strongly preferred.
